Pompeo says U.S. fully supports dialogue between Turkey, Greece

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington strongly encourages dialogue between Greece and Turkey for a peaceful resolution of maritime disputes in the eastern Mediterranean, Kathimerini reported.

“We strongly support dialogue between NATO allies Greece and Turkey and encourage them to resume discussion… as soon as possible,” Kathimerini cited Pompeo as saying during a visit at the U.S. naval base at Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete on Tuesday.

Pompeo’s visit to the naval base came after he met with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and discussed the military escalation that has raised fears of a war between the two NATO members.

“The United States and Greece … reaffirmed their belief that maritime delimitation issues should be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law,” the United States and Greece said in a joint statement after the meeting.

Tensions escalated last month after Turkey sent a research vessel, accompanied by warships, to prospect for energy resources in an area Greece claims as its own continental shelf. Athens has also sent its warships to the area.
